Gillis W. Long of Rapides Parish, La., served seven terms in the U.S. House of Representative from the Louisiana 8th Congressional District (1963-65, 1973-1985). He was a member of the Long family, a prominent political family of Louisiana. Huey Pierce Long, Russell B. Long, George Shannon Long, Speedy O. Long, and Earl K. Long were among his cousins. L.O. Fusilier attended Louisiana State University in the early to mid 1940s, finishing law school in 1947 before reaching the age of 21. At LSU, Fusilier met Gillis Long, and they continued their friendship after graduation. Fusilier also financially supported Long's campaigns.
